Leonardo plays Arnie, a 18-year-old with a developmental disability.

Plot

The film opens in the small fictional town of Endora, Iowa, where Gilbert Grape is busy caring for Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio), his brother with a developmental disability as they wait for the many tourists' trailers to pass through town during their "yearly ritual" of camping at a nearby recreational area. His mother, Bonnie is morbidly overweight, after years of depression following her husband's suicide. With Bonnie unable to care for the children by herself, Gilbert has taken responsibility for repairing their old farmhouse and looking after Arnie, who has a habit of climbing the town water tower if he is left unsupervised for too long, while his sisters Amy and Ellen do the chores and the cooking. The relationship between the brothers is of both care and protection, as Gilbert continually enforces the "Nobody touches Arnie" policy. A new "FoodLand" supermarket has opened, threatening the small Lamson's Grocery store where Gilbert works. In addition, Gilbert is having an affair with a married woman, Betty Carver.

While the family is preparing for Arnie's 18th birthday party, a young woman named Becky and her grandmother are stuck in town when their SUV with trailer in tow breaks down. Gilbert's unusual life circumstances threaten to get in the way of their budding romance. In order to spend time with Becky watching the sun set, Gilbert leaves Arnie alone in the bathtub by himself. He returns home late and wakes up the following morning to find Arnie still in the bath, shivering in the now freezing cold water. Gilbert's guilt is compounded by his family's anger. From then on Arnie refuses to get anywhere near water, including the pond by Becky's trailer, making him incredibly dirty all the time, unfortunately adding to the many problems Gilbert is facing. Betty's affair with Gilbert ends when she tries to have sex with him while he's on the phone with her husband and begins to make demands on him. She eventually leaves town in search of a new life following her husband's death — he drowns after suffering a heart attack. Many of the townspeople believe she killed him, despite the insistence by Bobby McBurney's, one of the town coroners, that it was just a heart attack. Besides Bobby, Gilbert was the only one who believed Betty didn't kill her husband.

Becky bonds with Gilbert and Arnie and helps Gilbert reflect on his feelings. They become deeply involved in one of their talks, until Gilbert realizes that Arnie is missing. He has returned to the water tower he is forever trying to climb, and this time has succeeded. Arnie is arrested, compelling his obese mother — who has not left the house in seven years — to rush to the police station to demand his release, making her the object of ridicule.

Soon after, Arnie disappears at the County Fair and is found having climbed a high tree. Later at home, he prematurely eats an expensive birthday cake, and resists Gilbert's trying to force him to take a bath. Losing his temper, Gilbert strikes Arnie. Appalled, Gilbert drives away. Arnie leaves the house to find Becky, who takes care of him. Gilbert sees him with Becky, who is able to get Arnie to enter the lake. And thus, Arnie overcomes his fear of water, something Gilbert realizes he was able to do and feels bad for his earlier behavior. After their sisters come to Becky's and take Arnie home, Gilbert approaches Becky and the two talk about his own frustration and the reality of his father's death. The next day he returns home during Arnie's birthday party to apologize.

Following Arnie's eighteenth birthday and meeting Becky for the first time, Bonnie climbs the stairs to her bedroom for the first time in years. That evening she passes away in her bed. Arnie tries to wake her, thinking that she is just playing. He runs out of the house and begins to hurt himself. As his sisters' try to stop him, they realize that Bonnie has died. The police officers tell the Grape family that they would need a crane and the National Guard to get Bonnie out of the house. After the police leave, Gilbert and his sisters soon cry over losing her. The siblings realize that this would draw a gawking crowd and want to protect their mother from being a spectacle. They empty the house except for their mother's body laying on the bed she was sleeping on, then they set everything on fire.

Can you believe Leo is not brain damaged?!
Author: mstorey-1 from Mississippi

As many have said, the first time I saw this slice of "unusual" life film, I was certain that the actor playing Arnie was mentally handicapped. This was the performance to end all. I have been around mentally challenged people who were the carbon copy of the character that Leonardo portrayed. I do no think that anyone else could have pulled this off without looking ridiculous. Our protagonist, Johnny Depp did his usual amazing work, but it is the performance by Leo that makes this film a must see. I just saw it again tonight, and was blown away again. Acting schools must have copies of this in their files!! Will always be a Leo fan for this one film alone.

Goofs!

  • Revealing mistakes: When Gilbert finds Arnie in the bath and takes him out, you can see a towel around Arnie's waist.

  • Continuity: When Gilbert and Becky hug goodbye before she leaves, the relative positions of their arms alternates between shots.

  • Crew or equipment visible: When the mother comes out of the jailhouse a bounce card (light reflector) is visible.

  • Continuity: After Arnie climbs down from the water tower the first time, the policemen give him a warning and Arnie does the thing with his finger against his nose. His hand then jumps from his face, down to his side and back again between shots.

  • Continuity: In the diner, after the undertaker discusses the reality of death, Gilbert picks up his coffee cup twice between shots without having enough time to put it down.

  • Continuity: After Gilbert sees the husband on the trampoline outside, he puts on his jacket and he pulls down his apron, but when he's coming out of the house moments later, he pulls his apron out of his trousers.

  • Continuity: When Gilbert and Becky kiss in the trailer, her head is tilted to the right; between shots it becomes tilted to the left

  • Continuity: When eating breakfast in the diner, the bowls of cereal are alternately full/empty between shots.

  • Continuity: When Gilbert and Becky load her groceries in the rain they load them in the back of the truck under a tarp on the passenger side. When they arrive at the campsite they unload them from the driver's side.

  • Continuity: The first time Arnie climbs the tower, Gilbert's pickup truck is parked below although he has not driven up yet.

  • Continuity: The total changes on the cash register in the grocery store scene between Gilbert and Betty even though he does not enter any items during their conversation.

  • Continuity: When Gilbert is eating watermelon, the first couple of shots show only two seeds. Then when the camera goes back to him once again, there are a lot of seeds, yet this is supposed to be the same piece.

  • Continuity: In Arnie's Party, from outside the house, Momma is seen looking out between two curtains. Later, from inside the house, she is looking out the window while lifting up a window blind.

  • Continuity: When the family go to find Arnie (after Gilbert hit him) they are at Becky's trailer. It is clearly very dark when they set out to find Arnie. In all the shots of Gilbert, the sky is dark, but in the shots of Arnie/Becky the sky is light as though it is dawn.

  • Errors in geography: When Gilbert is looking at Becky through the grocery store shelves, you can see six or seven loaves of different varieties of Mrs Baird's bread, which is a Texas (not Iowa) bakery.

  • Errors in geography: At the beginning of the movie you can see the reflection in the "ENDora OF THE LINE drugs" store window of a blue and white Manor (Texas) Police Car as it drives by.

  • Continuity: When Becky's grandmother is explaining to the mechanic about the worn needle valve, they are both at the back of the vehicle. When the shot opens up for the view of the water tower, she is talking over the shot, but she is on her own while the mechanic is rolling a tire around the vehicle.

  • Continuity: When Gilbert walks into the water towards Becky, her hair is wet, in the next shot it's dry.

  • Continuity: The position of the Burger Barn cup in Arnie's hand when he is drinking his shake. First the logo is seen. In the next shot it is turned away.

  • Continuity: As Arnie climbs down from water tower for the first time in the movie, looking down on the crowd below, we see his sneaker fall and hit the ground. A few seconds later, it falls again and lands in front of Gilbert.
